Systems Engineer, Power Electronics & Microgrid
Redwood City, CA or Austin, TXAmbrosia Energy is on a mission to make solar + battery systems the fastest-to-deploy and most cost-effective energy source in the US and beyond. As global energy demand surges—driven by the rapid rise of data centers, electric vehicles, and future in-home robotics—the world stands at a critical energy inflection point. To meet this challenge, we need innovative, scalable power sources. Our engineering-led team, with expertise in designing and deploying satellite constellations (Swarm, Starlink Mobile), is now focused on energy on Earth. We're developing affordable, clean energy solutions with new battery storage systems. United by strong team camaraderie, we prioritize speed, rapid iteration, vertical integration, and a test-like-you-fly approach. We're committed to making an impact on the future of energy.
We are designing and developing a distributed battery storage system to pair with solar panels that are quick and easy to install. The system is simple, robust, reliable, and easy to manufacture at scale. It includes highly efficient DC-DC conversion, solar MPPT, power distribution, no moving parts, and efficient cable management to make everything plug-and-play in the field. As a Systems Engineer for Power Electronics & Microgrid, you will bridge the gap between silicon-level hardware design and standalone, off-grid system architecture. You are a unique engineer who can design highly efficient power converters in the lab and turn around to draft the precise, code-compliant electrical single-line/one-line diagrams (SLDs) required for permitting, manufacturing, and remote deployments. You will own the electrical architecture from the printed circuit board to the local microgrid distribution point, driving rapid iterations to field-deploy our standalone energy infrastructure at record speed.
Responsibilities
- Design, analyze, and test highly efficient DC-DC power converters and MPPT architectures optimized for harsh, passive-cooled outdoor environments.
- Own the creation, maintenance, and execution of comprehensive electrical one-line and three-line diagrams, wiring schedules, and system schematics for standalone, off-grid microgrid systems.
- Translate complex, off-grid system requirements into detailed electrical schematics, sizing conductors, overcurrent protection devices (OCPD), disconnects, and switchgear in full compliance with relevant National Electrical Code (NEC) standards.
- Drive the technical engineering packages required for local permitting authorities and remote deployment site approvals, ensuring swift regulatory clearance.
- Optimize power distribution, load management, and stability controls for independent, islanded microgrids powering high-density computing and isolated infrastructure.
- Conduct simulation, lab testing, and validation of power electronics assemblies using oscilloscopes, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) systems, multimeters, and power analyzers.
- Work closely with mechanical, factory automation, and field deployment teams to ensure seamless hardware build-up, standardizing on plug-and-play interconnects to minimize deployment time.
- Draft clear validation procedures and verification test plans to guide production and field technicians during system bring-up.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, power systems engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
- 3+ years of professional experience in power electronics design and power converter development (e.g., DC-DC, AC-DC, or standalone inverter topologies).
- Proven proficiency in electrical CAD design software (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, SolidWorks Electrical, or similar) specifically for drafting industrial or microgrid-scale one-line diagrams.
- Hands-on experience with debugging, testing, and validating electrical systems using advanced lab equipment.
- Strong, applicable knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) standards for standalone solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, DC microgrids, and energy storage integration.
- Extreme attention to detail and a relentless commitment to speed, agility, and high-quality hardware execution.
Preferred Skills or Experience
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power electronics or independent microgrids.
- Deep understanding of standalone solar PV string architectures, lithium-ion battery management systems (BMS), and high-voltage DC hazards.
- Experience modeling islanded power systems, transient load responses, and running short circuit and coordination studies (e.g., using ETAP, SKM, or MATLAB/Simulink).
- Prior experience working in a high-growth startup environment or an aerospace/automotive testing culture where rapid iteration is the norm.
- Direct experience engineering rapid-deployment power systems for remote, industrial, or off-grid commercial applications.
